Why this book never gets to pick the movie:

  • It's the first book I ever wrote, and I didn't know anything about genres or trope expectations.
  • Basically, this is a dystopian women's fiction book (tell me when you find that on Amazon's categories!).
  • The main character is a wife and mother, not the brooding teenager of most dystopian best-sellers.
  • It's a little slow to start, and I use way too many adverbs. My writing was in its infancy!
  • I also started with homemade covers, and by the time I had great ones by J Caleb Designs, it was like pushing a boulder up a mountain to get this book any visibility on Amazon.

Why it could still be your favorite child:

  • The story is complex with deep, fulfilling relationships, and a unique protagonist and gut-wrenching love story.
  • It's slow to start, but once it gets going, I've had hundreds of readers tell me they stayed up all night to get to the end...and then started book 2.
  • Many of my readers tell me this is still their very favorite series of mine.
  • The utopian world is rich and rife with ethical dissonance. Their solutions to problems will keep you up at night and make you think. You'll want to talk about it with your friends at bookclub.

Life Story:

The first thing they take isn't your freedom. It's your memory of ever wanting it.

A virus nearly wiped out the human race. In order to survive, people are segregated into three tiers. Those with the best genetic viability get the most resources, and Kate and Eric are lucky enough to end up in Tier 1.

Pairs are matched based on their genetic markers, but new research emerges showing that Kate and Eric's pairing isn't as ideal as it once was. The worst part? They never tell Kate a thing.

Confused by Eric pulling away, Kate scrambles to salvage their life together. But the Communities never intended to let her have a say.

Now she has to prove the truth before she loses her partner, her children, and the life they built together. Before she forgets she ever went looking for answers.
