Why this book never gets to pick the movie:
Book 1's rough opening lost people before the story got good
It was released while unfinished so each book ended on a cliffhanger
Sold to the wrong readers
Why it could still be your favorite child:
It's a complete series, with a real ending It's high concept about the last human on Earth, and every machine that gets too close "wakes up". It's a slow burn between a girl and a machine which is poignant, especially now. These were my very first books, and I love the story deeply.
Life story:
A century after the machines won the war, they still act like us.
They go to work. They eat food they don't need. They fall in love on schedule. And not one of them knows that seventeen-year-old Arista Barnes is human—as far as anyone knows, the last one on Earth.
She's survived by blending in: steady breathing, even footsteps, never standing out. Because Arista carries a secret the machines would kill to understand. When her emotions spike, the machines around her wake up, free of their programming for the first time in their lives.
One accident, and her cover is blown. Captured and tortured by the Cadre, the regime that keeps the world in perfect, unchanging order, Arista has one way out: Frees, a masked, skinless rebel who has spent ten years hunting for a human. He wants her power to free his people. She needs his help to save the two machines who raised her before their bodies shut down for good.
Neither trusts the other. Both are running out of time. And buried beneath Cadre headquarters is a secret about what the machines have been doing with humans all along.
